Preparing for your newborn photography session can feel overwhelming, especially when you're adjusting to life with a brand-new baby. Between sleepless nights, feedings, and soaking in all those newborn snuggles, it can be hard to know exactly what you'll need for your session.
The good news? As your Atlanta and Northwest Georgia newborn photographer, I take care of most of the details for you.
My newborn sessions are designed to be calm, relaxed, and baby-led, allowing you to simply enjoy this special season while I document the tiny details you'll never want to forget.
If you're wondering what to bring to your newborn session, here's everything you need to know.
1. Bring a Well-Fed Baby

One of the best ways to prepare for a smooth newborn session is to feed your baby right before we begin.
A full tummy often helps babies feel content, cozy, and sleepy, which can make transitions throughout the session a little easier. If possible, I also recommend keeping baby awake for a short period beforehand.
That said, every baby is different. Newborn sessions are completely baby-led, and we'll always follow your little one's needs.
Need feeding breaks during the session? Absolutely.
Extra cuddles? Perfect.
A little fussiness? Completely normal.
2. Pack Babies Essentials
Whether you're breastfeeding, pumping, or formula feeding, it's helpful to have all feeding supplies nearby.
Consider bringing:
Bottles
Formula
Burp cloths
Nursing supplies
Breast pump supplies if needed
Most newborn sessions last between 1.5 to 3 hours, giving us plenty of time for feeding, soothing, and diaper changes without feeling rushed.
3. Extra Diapers and Wipes

Newborns are adorable, but they're also unpredictable.
Having extra diapers and wipes within reach helps make the session stress-free when inevitable diaper changes happen.
Trust me—accidents are part of newborn photography, and they're never a problem.
4. A Pacifier (If You Use One)
If your baby uses a pacifier, be sure to bring it along.
Even babies who don't use one regularly may find comfort in it during transitions between setups or family portraits.
A pacifier can often help soothe baby while keeping the session moving smoothly.
5. Dress Baby in Something Easy to Remove
Before your session, I recommend dressing baby in a simple zip-up sleeper or an outfit that's easy to remove.
This helps avoid disturbing a sleepy baby when it's time to begin photographing.
The less we have to move and adjust baby at the beginning of the session, the better.
6. Keep the Environment Warm and Cozy
Whether we're photographing your newborn in your home, outdoors, or in the studio, a warm environment helps babies stay comfortable and sleepy.
Don't worry about bringing extra blankets or props.
I provide:
Newborn wraps
Newborn outfits
Props
Everything is selected with a soft, timeless, lifestyle-inspired aesthetic in mind.
And yes—moms also have access to my client closet to help make outfit planning easier!
7. Coordinate Simple, Neutral Outfits
One of the biggest questions I receive is what parents should wear for newborn photos. During our phone consultation, we will always go over outfits. I will 100% hold your hand if needed to help you find the best clothes for your family!
For timeless images, I recommend:
Creams
Ivory
Beige
Soft pastels
Earth tones
Light textures
Flowy dresses, cozy knits, and simple fabrics photograph beautifully while keeping the focus on your connection as a family.
Try to avoid:
Bright colors
Large logos
Busy patterns
For moms, choose something that makes you feel beautiful and comfortable. These photos aren't about perfection—they're about preserving this season exactly as it is.
For dads, soft neutral shirts, sweaters, or button-downs work wonderfully.
8. Bring Patience for Siblings

If siblings are joining us, know that a little unpredictability is expected.
Toddlers and young children rarely follow the plan—and honestly, that's okay.
Bringing:
Small snacks
A favorite toy
A tablet or phone for breaks
Lots of patience
It can help keep everyone happy and relaxed throughout the session.
Some of my favorite sibling photos come from those authentic, unscripted moments. Don't fret about kids being kids; you'll be shocked at what is captured even with the "craziest" of toddlers.
9. Bring Yourself—and Let Me Handle the Rest
The most important thing you can bring to your newborn session is yourself.
You don't need a perfectly sleeping baby.
You don't need perfect outfits.
You don't need to stress about every detail.
My role is to guide you through the entire experience while creating images that feel natural, connected, and true to your family.
As an APNPI-certified newborn photographer, your baby's safety and comfort are always my top priorities. Every session is designed to move at a pace that allows your family to relax and enjoy these fleeting moments together.
